A Beauty Therapist or Aesthetician

A qualified beautician, body therapist (with optional electrolysist) is able to carry out a range of beauty treatments to the face and body. 

 

An Aesthetician is qualified to perform the following treatments.

 

Facials to improve skin care and condition   Make-up   Manicure and pedicure   Waxing   Electrolysis (the permanent removal of unwanted hair)   Body massage     Dietary advice, nutrition and exercise   Electrotherapy for the face and body Treatments to promote a feeling of well being   May be trained in other therapies e.g. Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage

A Beauty Consultant

Works for a cosmetics manufacturer selling a particular brand, usually in large departmental stores.

A Beautician

Specialises in:

• Skin care  
• Make-up  
• Facial treatments  
• Manicure and pedicure  
• Waxing

An Electrolysist

Specialises in the permanent removal of unwanted hair, generally on the face. Other parts of the body can also be treated. Electrolysis is often known as Electrical Epilation.

A Body Therapist

Is able to provide a full range of body treatments:

 

• Manual treatments e.g. massage  
• Electrotherapy which aids figure control  
• Figure diagnosis and corrective techniques to improve condition and shape
• Body wraps etc   

 A Masseuse/Masseur

Carries out body massage only, usually Swedish massage but can develop through postgraduate courses to include:

• Tension massage 
• Hydrotherapy  
• Orthopaedic massage  
• Aromatherapy  
• Sports massage  
• And others

 Therapists can add post graduate training which enables them to widen their treatment range or specialise in a particular area.

Aromatherapy 

A specialised type of massage using a blend of essential oils.

Reflexology

The ancient art of foot massage to restore and maintain the body's own natural balance using reflexology massage techniques and sequences.

Indian Head Massage

An ancient Indian massage technique, which relieves stress and tension found in the scalp, shoulders, neck and face. 

Reiki

The simplest and most natural method of healing.

 

Hopi Ear Candles 

A soothing and relaxing treatment used in ancient therapy.

 

Sports Massage

A massage specifically developed for working on sports injuries.

The growing interest in feeling fit and looking good has created an increase in opportunities for beauty therapists. There is a fairly rapid turnover in jobs and it is possible to reach supervisory or management level within two or three years of qualifying.

The majority of qualified beauty therapists work either in salons or health resorts such as Champneys.

There are also opportunities for working in sports clubs, therapy clinics, department stores, clubs, airline companies (both in the air and on the ground) and hotels.

There are limited opportunities to work on ocean liners and there are very few posts available in film and television.

With experience comes the opportunity to pass on your skills to other therapists as a tutor. A certificate in Further Education Adult Teaching would be required for this.

Opportunities to be self-employed include freelance, mobile (home visits) or working from home and of course becoming a salon owner.
